History

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was formed in 1824. The service is totally reliant on voluntary contributions from the public. We do not receive any money from the government. We cover the whole of the British Isles and use craft which are at the forefront of technology. There are over two hundred stations around the coasts with a selection of inshore, all-weather, hovercraft and Thames lifeboats on station. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It currently costs over £110m per year to run the service.

We are a charity (Registered Charity no.: 209603) and our patron is Her Majesty The Queen.

The Exeter & District Branch was reformed on 17 February 1988 after a period of low activity. Since then, the branch has increased it’s work and income.

For some time it was apparent that the Exeter area could sustain two branches and on 22 September 1999 the Topsham Branch was formerly inaugurated to cover the EX3 postcode area. The existing Exeter & District Branch covers the postcode areas EX1 to EX6, excluding EX3.

With effect from 1 April 2003, the branch took over the administration and duties of the former Crediton Branch. In addition to the above areas, we now cover postcodes EX17 (1-6), EX18 (7) and EX37 (9).
